The whimpers from a garbage can in a remote area of Levi Carter Park sounded like raccoons, and the Omaha man was hesitant to investigate.
“When I looked in there, I saw the puppy, and I was like, ‘What the heck?’”
Three little puppies, underweight and dirty, were stuffed in a box inside a gunny sack in the garbage can. The blanket they rested on wasn’t enough to keep them warm.
Tim, who found the puppies, doesn’t want his last name used because he’s trying to discover who abandoned them. He figures it’s someone in the neighborhood near Eppley Airfield.
He wants them prosecuted for animal cruelty. It was pure luck, he said, that he decided to try a new route to collect cans last week and heard the puppies, pit bull mixes who are about 5 weeks old.
“I picked two of them up out of the can. The third one was whining like I was going to leave him,” he said. “They climbed on me and licked me.”
